Evictions expert Paul Shamplina has launched the first video in a series highlighting the challenges faced by landlords in today’s private rental market and his thoughts on how to overcome them.

The first is released today on YouTube and highlights one issue uncovered by Paul’s work for Channel 5’s TV show Nightmare Tenants, Slum Landlord.

The video is introduced by Shamplina and features a landlord he helped on the programme, in this case involving an increasingly common problem for landlords; dodgy letting agents who fail to pass on rent.

Landlord Margaret Wilson knows about this first-hand. She enlisted Shamplina’s help to recoup £20,000 in unpaid rent that she says is owed to her by Oxfordshire lettings agency Christopher Stanley.

“Recent research revealed that three quarters of landlords and tenants do not understand what Client Money Protection is or how the law protects landlords and tenants from dodgy agents, requiring them to be part of an official scheme,” says Shamplina.

Simone Potter Reed, Investigator at National Trading Standards Estate and Letting Agency Team (NTSELAT) says: “It is of the utmost importance that all letting agents are members of a Client Money Protection Scheme to provide security and peace of mind for tenants and landlords.

“NTSELAT advises that tenants and landlords check if their agent is registered with one of the six approved CMP schemes before entering into business with them.  Take the time to make those checks to avoid financial detriment.”
